Oak Creek Commons

It’s a pleasant Sunday afternoon in Paso Robles, and children are playing outside on the grass near the playground at Oak Creek Commons. The view from unit 625 is one of the best, with mountains to the East and the swimming pool & spa area a short walk from the front porch.

After a tour of the sustainable orchard located next door to unit 625, I walked over to the spacious “common house” which is always unlocked and accessible to residents. The smell of fresh pasta and spaghetti sauce drew me to the kitchen where I met 4 of the residents chopping up veggies, slicing bread and stirring the fragrant sauce. All residents are welcome to eat dinner in the large dining room at a minimal price ($4.50/adults and $2.50/child). The kitchen is state-of –the-art, and the cooks are obviously enjoying the time together as they cook the meal. Cooking and cleaning are voluntary, and residents take turns offering healthy meals here every Thursday and Sunday. Holidays are special too – Thanksgiving will bring a Turkey dinner prepared by the volunteer cooks and all the fixings provided by participating residents. A true sense of community is evident as I chat with the cooks and the helpers.

The Common House (4000 square feet in size) is the heart of this small neighborhood, and it offers not only the kitchen and dining area (with fireplace) but also has a library, children’s activity room, and laundry room with 3 washers and 3 dryers available for a very low price (just sign up). In addition to this, there is a woodworking shop downstairs stocked with tools, and it is available to any competent handy-person.

If you have quests staying over for a day or two, just sign up for a private guest room in the common house (there are 2) with shower and bathroom facilities, available for free – just make the bed before the guest arrives and clean up after the guest leaves. The dining room of the common house is ideal for gatherings, and it can be used for birthday parties, and has seen a wedding reception or two. It is free of charge and available to residents only. It is modern and has a homey, friendly feel and it’s ideal for the occasional family gathering or party. A large deck (with lovely views of the blue oak forest) lies off of the dining room, perfect for outdoor meals or activities.

The quality of life is very evident in this neighborhood, with residents participating in activities and outdoor maintenance. In addition to the orchard, which offers all kinds of fruit trees, there is an organic vegetable garden with raised planting beds. Residents are welcome to plant their favorite veggies here, and the produce finds itself on the table at the community meals.  This is a safe and comfortable neighborhood, with children playing on the community-built playground and visiting with each other on the lawn. One of the reasons residents like this neighborhood so much is because they appreciate that kids can safely play here – and play outside - and there are plenty of friends and things to do here.

If I had to choose what I like best about Oak Creek Commons, it would have to be the 10 acres of oak-studded walking trails. As a pet lover, I know my two dogs (labs) would enjoy the walk down to the creek, and a romp in the fenced dog-park with a Frisbee would keep them fit and happy. Pets are allowed at Oak Creek Commons and several residents have dogs and cats. While wandering along the trails, I  found “meditation hill,” a gorgeous and peaceful spot to stop and relax. It was a highlight of my walk, and would provide a peaceful and calming place to pause after a hard day at work.

In summary, Oak Creek Commons feels like stepping back in time to a kinder and gentler era of neighbors that care about each other and about the place they live. Just a quick stroll down the sidewalk was enough for me to know that I would find friends here; they greeted me with smiles as I walked along. Oak Creek Commons is a great place to live, to raise a family, to grow older in, with a mix of all ages living here. It is an excitingly retro “new” community that offers much to those who wish to join in and enjoy life together.

As a condominium neighborhood, each homeowner currently pays $284 per month. This fee can be “worked off” by helping to maintain the complex: 2 hours for a single resident or 3 hours for a couple. A resident is able to work off $40 from the monthly fee if they choose, making the cost per month $244. Below is a list of amenities that the homeowner’s association provides:

The Oak Creek Commons is a "cohousing community". Cohousing began in Demark several decades ago, and has developed here in the United States at about 80 sites. The idea of cohousing is to create a happy mix between privacy and community. Each household has their own own, while a tthe same time participating in common activities with their neighbors.
